Head was founded by an aeronautical engineer named Howard Head. He was an avid skier and also worked for a company that designed fuselages for aircraft. Being a skier he was amazed that skis were still being constructed of wood and he felt that the materials he used in his engineering work would be superior. Head began designing, building and testing a variety of skis made from aluminum and plastic laminate. After a few years of trial and error he finally came up with a strong, light and highly functional ski.
Head’s ski design grew in popularity through the 1950′s and led the industry standard throughout the 1960′s. Although Howard Head saw great success in the 1960′s with his line of skis, he soon grew bored and sold the ski company in 1969 to AMF (American Machine and Foundry) and begin focusing on tennis.
Soon after selling the ski company Head went to work engineering and designing tennis rackets. He was determined to build a stronger, lighter racket using aluminum. Head’s persistence paid off quickly and his new line of aluminum framed rackets were introduced at the U.S. Open later that year in 1969.
To stick with the companies true level of sports diversity, Head acquired a diving gear manufacturer and a ski binding company in the 1970′s. In addition to these companies Head also purchased controlling assets in several other companies including Penn. Penn manufacturers balls for tennis and racquetball and is now the official ball used in racquetball associations worldwide and is used in many major tennis tournaments around the globe as well.
